Funken Lodge

The common parts were just beautiful, the storage provision at the entrance for boots and luggage, the reception, bart, cosy seating and lounge areas and restaurant were beautiful and very well thought out in terms of comfort and sophistication. The bedroom was a little overheated and tired looking - the paint work could be refreshed and made lighter - it felt a little dingy with dark walls and poor lighting. However, that should not detract from the overall which was a wonderful stay in a lovely hotel. The menu food was outstanding too!

I liked the location at the end of the town. The view of Longyearbyen Glacier over breakfast was breathtaking. In general the staff were very helpful and when we come back to Svalbard we will stay in Funken, if the rates are still good. The room was lovely. One two nights an arctic fox passed by our bedroom window and another night a bunting (little bird) sang outside our room. Can you imagine?!?! It was amazing. The breakfast was quite good but the quality was not always perfect, but I have to understand this is the high Arctic, not Paris! The staff were so helpful over breakfast. A Sri Lankan lady (whose name escapes me just now, apologies) was wonderful and made us feel so o at home during breakfast. We feel we made a friend with her. Other staff were also very helpful. The receptionist guy from Oslo (I am so sorry but I could not see your name tag) who started in July was also particularly helpful and friendly - thanks! The gym was well appointed and quiet with a nice sauna I wasn't expecting!

This is fabulous hotel on the edge of town - the staff were a highlight, from my checkin with Richard to the incredibly warm and helpful Tina and other receptionist from the UK, and really great bar staff Davide, Tito, and Tartour who were genuinely friendly and as interested in the landscape and all Svalbard has to offer. The company is fortunate to have such great staff! The hotel was perfectly cosy and inviting as were its staff! The n. lights can be seen from the back of the hotel - it was perfect.

The breakfast was decent, not amazing. The dinner we had at the restaurant had great drinks and appetizers. Our entrees were underwhelming. Overall, the service throughout the areas of the hotel was exceptional. Every staff member, especially the front desk, went above and beyond.

Overall the hotel has this cosy atmosphere, rooms very simple but very stylish. Heating in the room was perfect. It was also very quiet so it made really easy for me to unwind after a long day spent on tours. The staff is amazing, absolutely doing everything to make the whole experience even better. Special mention to Maggie and Sergey who went above and beyond to make sure that people enjoy their time in the hotel. Breakfast selection is just enough in my opinion, everything is fresh and well prepared.
